The coastal regions of Hainan and Hong Kong were battered by two separate typhoons, as the Chinese government warned local populations of the threat of flooding and landslides. Fourteen people were killed and over 150 injured in a suspected industrial explosion in northwestern China. The launch of Shenzhou 11 marked the beginning of China's longest ever space mission. The United States (US) questioned China's actions as China has continued to import North Korean coal, which hampers the effectiveness of United Nations (UN) sanctions against North Korea. The Chinese Defence Ministry challenged the US over USS Decatur's patrol near the Parcel Islands in the South China Sea. The Japanese military were condemned for its dangerous interceptions of Chinese military aircraft. Weak demand in domestic and global markets resulted in a decline in China's imports and exports in September.
