Tens of thousands of Algerian citizens attended the funeral of national independence hero, Hocine Ait-Ahmed. The Algerian government raised concerns over the large influx of Moroccans attempting to cross into Libya through Algeria. Algeria announced plans to restrict powers and presidential terms. In a state visit to Algeria, the Maltese President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca announced her country's desire to further strengthen its cooperation with Algeria on a range of issues. The Algerian Air Force purchased 2 Su-34 Sukhoi Russian fighter jets in attempts to upgrade its current outdated Soviet-era Su-24s. On 10 January, the Algerian government paid $26 million in support for the 2016 budget of the Palestinian National Authority. On 12 January, Algerian security forces arrested seven gunmen in the southern region of Amenas, close to the gas plant where a deadly attack occurred in January 2013. The Council of Ministers approved the project of a new commercial port expected to be built at El Hamdania, in the town of Cherchell.
