Tanzanian authorities have released a Kuwaiti national who was being held on smuggling charges. Forty-nine candidates will be contesting in the parliamentary by-elections for a new lawmaker on 20 February. Kuwait has recalled its ambassador to Iran amidst a row between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Kuwait has also rejected statements by Iranian delegates criticising Saudi Arabia. The appeals court has upheld the death penalty for the main organiser of the bombing of a Shiite mosque last year. Eighty-nine people were arrested in a police operation in Hawally. Kuwait’s parliament approved a request for $10 billion in additional funds for military spending over the next ten years. The air force is continuing plans to purchase new fighter jets from the United States. The Emir of Kuwait has announced plans to cut heavy subsidies on fuel and power to offset the fall in oil revenues.
