Tensions have dramatically escalated between Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, with the UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs warning of a major crisis facing the Gulf Cooperation Council. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with US President Donald Trump in Washington. German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in the UAE on an official state visit. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Washington. Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi has accused Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of “behaving like an occupier of Yemen rather than its liberator.” The prime minister of Libya’s UN- backed government, met with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the head of the Libyan National Army, in Abu Dhabi. The US government announced that it has approved a $2 billion arms sale to the UAE in an effort to bolster security in the region. UAE-backed forces have taken control of Aden Airport, Yemen. The UAE has announced that Emirati military recruits are being trained on Socotra Island, Yemen. Eight Arab princesses are being tried in absentia in Brussels for trafficking and abusing servants during their stay in the country. According to the IMF, the UAE is adjusting well to the low oil price environment, with non-oil economic growth rebounding in the Emirates during 2017. The UAE has contributed approximately $137 dollars tp the Yemeni health sector between 2015 and 2017.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin, in an effort to strengthen relations between the two countries. The UAE allegedly arranged a secret meeting in January 2017 as part of an effort to establish a back-channel line of communication between Moscow and President-elect Donald Trump. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo. New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English has announced that his country is considering restrictions on laptops and other large electronic devices on flight cabins from some Muslims majority countries in the Middle East. An Emirati soldier was shot dead in an incident involving an Iranian ship that was attempting to enter UAE territorial waters. Dubai police have arrested a group of foreign hackers after they targeted five senior White House officials in a blackmail email scam. An Iranian businessman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, after being convicted of attempting to re-export an electric generator to Iran. According to a report from the World Economic Forum, the UAE is the second safest country in the world behind only Finland. Following talks on 24 April between, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, the UAE and Japan have agreed to broaden economic ties between the two countries. Two major lenders in the UAE, the First Gulf Bank and the National Bank of Abu Dhabi, have merged to become the largest bank in the country under the name First Abu Dhabi Bank. On 26 April, Emirates National Oil Company (Enoc) opened the UAE’s first solar- powered petrol station.

The US has banned passengers from carrying certain portable electronic devices in cabins on specific flights from the UAE. The UAE will cooperate with this policy. The Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation for Legal Affairs summoned the Swiss Ambassador to the UAE in light of a Swiss statement criticising Bahrain. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum unveiled the UAE Centennial 2017 Plan, which aims to make the UAE the “best” country in the world. It was announced at a press conference for the Year of Giving that 1,400 charity initiatives are to be launched across the seven emirates. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has announced the formation of the World Happiness Council. Human Rights Watch, as well as a number of UN human rights experts, have called for authorities in the UAE to release human rights activist Ahmed Mansoor. Nasser bin Ghaith, an economist and lecturer, was jailed for 10 years because he allegedly criticised Egypt. Jordanian journalist Tayseer al-Najjar was convicted under Article 29 of the UAE’s Cybercrime Law, sentencing him to three years in prison and fining him 500,000 UAE Dirhams. Ukrainian national Iryna Nohai and her South African financé Emlyn Culverwell, who were accused of “unlawful sex”, have been released and charges against them have been dropped. The UAE has pledged €50 million to the Interpol Foundation for a Safer World. SAP announced on 14 March its five-year strategy to invest $200 million in the UAE. This declaration came as the German firm introduced its new MENA regional headquarters in Dubai Internet City. The Cabinet of the UAE approved the establishment of the UAE Council for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Following the success of the first Robot Pharmacy in Dubai, health authorities unveiled plans to implement further robotics in hospitals across the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE’s space agency signed a memorandum of understanding with universities across the UAE, to collaborate on research projects. In an effort to increase trade and tourism with Russia, the UAE is offering all Russian visitors visas on arrival to the country. During his visit to the UAE, Costa Rican president announced that Costa Rica will establish an embassy in the UAE to boost relations between the two countries. India and the UAE increased its partnership status to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The UAE announced its plans to invest in green energy to reduce carbon emissions. The Emirates Nuclear Energy Cooperation announced that the first nuclear energy complex in the UAE is 75 per cent complete. UAE supported Arab coalition forces in Yemen, to shoot down an Iranian military drone. The UAE and Britain launched a joint military exercise dubbed Sea Dagger 2017. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced that 2017 will be the year of abundance and generous giving for the UAE and its citizens. A Bahraini investment firm has purchased a significant stake in the UAE’s water and utilities company.

United States (US) Department of Defence announced the transfer of 12 Guantanamo bay prisoners to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Reports emerged that the UAE’s intelligence service is actively creating a task force to spy on Emirati citizens. UAE aircraft will fly in the United States Air Force's red flag exercise in the US, alongside Pakistan. The UAE, in collaboration with the US, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom (UK), agreed upon a new plan to solve the conflict in Yemen. The UAE agreed to provide a $1 billion deposit to Egypt’s central bank. The UAE’s national bank announced that it expects the loan market to flatline. Utico Middle East, a UAE-owned utility company announced planed investment of $185 million to double its water desalination capacity.

In the affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the UAE government has launched an investment initiative to boost competitiveness in a number of different sectors in a bid to establish Dubai as a manufacturing hub. The United Arab Bank, following the suit of other banks in the Gulf has secured a $150 million dollar loan. The UAE has warned its citizens to refrain from wearing traditional garments when abroad. The government of the UAE has signed an agreement to open a new UN women Liaison office in Abu Dhabi. The UAE’s foreign minister made his first ever visit to Malta to discuss bilateral relations. The UAE announced the opening of an embassy in Budapest, Hungary next year. The UAE has acquired a new technology system to tighten its security on its civilian population. The United States (US) State Department approved the possible sale of $785 million dollars worth of munitions and support to the UAE. A source close to the Turkey Intelligence Agency has claimed that the UAE government collaborated with coup plotters.

The Emirati government announced details of the value added tax system that it intends to introduce by 2018. The European Commission was granted permission by European Union (EU) member states to arrange air traffic agreements with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Turkey, and other Asian states. Fourteen Emiratis formed the first youth parliament in Fujairah region. The President of the UAE granted the release of 1010 inmates before the start of Ramadan. The American National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) signed an agreement to cooperate with the UAE on space exploration projects. The UAE announced that its involvement in the Yemen war is almost over. The UAE’s largest utility companies announced plans to move into the solar power industry.

The United Kingdom (UK) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced that they are working towards achieving a trade goal of $35.4 billion by 2020. As of 30 June, UAE airports will be charging passengers a service fee when leaving the country. An initiative by the UAE government was launched that prevents banks from taking legal action against small businesses struggling to payoff their debts. The UAE central bank instructed banks to freeze the assets of two senior officials at Abu Dhabi's state-owned International Petroleum Investment Co (IPIC) group. The UK, the UAE, and Jersey signed a number of deals to prevent double taxation. The Dodsal group, a UAE based firm, announced plans to invest $300 million in Tanzania’s gas projects. Egypt and the UAE undertook a joint training operation in Gulf waters. The UAE Red Crescent opened a school for children from Mosul, Iraq in the Dibaga Refugee Camp near Makhmour. The United States (US) is reported to be considering providing the UAE with military assistance in Yemen to fight Al Qaeda.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has pledged $137 million in aid of the Syrian crisis. The UAE's foreign minister visited Buenos Aries to discuss cooperation between the Argentinian government and the UAE. Major changes to the Federal government were announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, including the appointment of 5 female cabinet officers and a ‘Happiness and Tolerance’ minister. The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed made a visit to India where he signed nine strategic agreements binding the UAE’s relationship with India. UN human rights experts have called for the immediate release of 5 men whom have been held captive and tortured by UAE authorities. The UAE distributed further relief to the Yemen island of Socotra, following a natural disaster last year. The UAE has declared that it will deport more than 20 Lebanese individuals residing in the UAE in response to policies undertaken by the Lebanese foreign ministry. The UAE has announced plans to provide a $2.5 billion grant to the expansion of the Bahraini airport. The foreign minister of the UAE has riterated the UAE’s position in regards to Islamic State (IS), arguing that it is willing to send troops to fight against the militants.

In the affairs of the United Arab Emirates, the country has downgraded its diplomatic links with Iran. The UAE ambassador to Lebanon met with the Mufti of Lebanon to discuss Islamic affairs and the UAE’s role in the refugee crisis. The Abu Dhabi fund for Development pledged $46 million in concessional loans for renewable energy projects in developing countries. The Canadian National Salim Alarad, plead not guilty to three terror-related charges after being held in prison for over one year. UAE banks have been informed they must receive approval from the central bank regarding dividends. UAE Federal Electricity and Water Authority announced plans to develop and expand power distribution systems at a cost of $354 million. The Ministry of Finance announced its revenue expectations with the introduction of VAT. The Foreign Affairs Ministry has vehemently condemned North Korea's hydrogen bomb testing. Three Indians associated with terrorist cell IS were arrested in India after being deported from the UAE at India’s request.
